That would be one reason. I wonder why the tower wasn't broken while the one further up is totally destroyed.
I think you can see the repair line in the tower.
Just leave it as it is. If there are old photos or renovation records, they will be found.
Sometimes chance helps and a tourist sends old black and white pictures.

[attachment=8504][attachment=8505]The first black and white photo of the goal.
The gate around 2010 with architects' camp.
I have now seen quite a few pictures. The whole area was very badly damaged.
The start has been made, now it's really only a matter of time.

@Koen
I have found it. You can throw it out.
Photo before 1959, one pinnacle is clearly visible.

Register or Login to view., another Genoese fortress in Crimea. There still seems to be a good chance that the current appearance of the walls is from the late 14th century:
"As a result, on 19 July 1365, the Genoese from Kaffa seized the city, which became a Genoese trading colony. The Genoese refortified the city, constructing the citadel that is still visible today, and induced a large part of the deported Greeks to return.[3] Genoese rule lasted until 1475, when the Ottoman Grand Vizier Gedik Ahmed Pasha captured it after a long siege.[3]"
I found this by searching for Diane's picture on google, which led me to this site with pictures of Sudak battlements: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
So for now I will change the location of the castle to Sudak.
The Wikipedia article on the Sudak fortress contains this link:

There are no images - no paintings, manuscript folios or modern photos. There are links to images but none of the image links worked for me. However, the page does give a very detailed history of the Sudak fortress, including original construction techniques but not going so far as to mention the tower merlons.
Here are the other Sudak Fortress pages linked on the above one:

And this final link, which was to contact information but the information was removed following the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014:

This may be the closest thing there is to an official website for the fortress. Not sure any of this really helps answer the question of swallowtail merlons on the Sudak fortress in the 14th century (or before) and I looked but couldn't find any medieval manuscript images of it, which would probably be more compelling than any modern photos. If and when Russia no longer controls Crimea and/or the restoration is restarted, we may learn more. No matter how recent the current swallowtail merlons are, the people behind the restoration would have done their research before using them so I think it is safe to assume Sudak belongs on Koen's map.

I have noticed that the castles ‘Castello Norantola and Mesocco’ are not listed.
We already had them on the topic.

Both were built at the same time 12-14th cent.
There are no more battlements to be seen, but they are well documented archaeologically.
Together with the frescoes, this gives a nice line from Bellinzona over the pass almost as far as Chur.

Thanks! That website is really cool. I will add them now.
I'm still not sure what to do with the Genoese fortress in Sudak. I'm leaning towards keeping it on there, but will remove it if there are any objections.

Perhaps the castle (Castello del Buonconsiglio) of Trentino should also be included. If it already has frescoes (1395), then it was there too.
And it also has well-preserved parts of the city wall.

About San Marino. I would say yes. You can insert it.
Why. Both political parties were represented. 300 years of disputes. Anything is possible. In the end, the church won. The core castle has none, but the outer ring wall does. It is also certain that nothing was changed after 1450. If you look at the city's coat of arms on Wiki, San Marino has none of the battlements. But if you look at the old coat of arms in stone, at least 1 castle had battlements. Second ring wall.
So yes, you can enter it
