Thank you Koen
I doubt that this picture really shows the castle of Caffa.
Even the terrain in the background is somehow incorrect.
I've looked at quite a few pictures and paintings now, but there's nothing on it.
Where does this photo come from?

I've now had a look at the castle, the grounds and the town from different perspectives. Pictures and 2 all-round views. Not a trace of the battlements.
I think today someone has allowed themselves a fake to drag the origin of the VM into the Crimea.
Take a look at the links and the pictures on Google Maps, all-round views and form your own opinion.

I have visited Feodosia before and I know some people who live there, so I can ask them.

I think you are right. If I'm not mistaken, Diane's picture is from You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view., another Genoese fortress in Crimea. There still seems to be a good chance that the current appearance of the walls is from the late 14th century:
"As a result, on 19 July 1365, the Genoese from Kaffa seized the city, which became a Genoese trading colony. The Genoese refortified the city, constructing the citadel that is still visible today, and induced a large part of the deported Greeks to return.[3] Genoese rule lasted until 1475, when the Ottoman Grand Vizier Gedik Ahmed Pasha captured it after a long siege.[3]"
I found this by searching for Diane's picture on google, which led me to this site with pictures of Sudak battlements: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
So for now I will change the location of the castle to Sudak.

Thanks Koen, that looks much better.
But I'll have to investigate that first.
Now that I know these battlements, which look really real, but were only built around 1960. Just so it looks nice, I'm a bit sceptical. The period just doesn't fit the location. We'll see.

I have found the tower.
Difference between the tower where the only one with battlements is, and the remaining wall on the right.
What was restored, by whom and when?
I already have a feeling.

Yes, I was wondering if it might be Sudak, which I have never visited, though I would have liked to.

Google Lens actually helped this time:

The image that matched Diane's in the results is in this regional profile PDF of Crimea (page 5):

But there isn't a caption for the photo in the PDF so I did some more digging in Google Maps and found this different view, which shows the photographer's name and the map location:

The fortress seems to most commonly be identified as Genoese Fortress (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.) and is considered a museum. There is a phone number to call but I couldn't find an official website for it. I did find these two tourism links:

I know that the restoration started in 1958 and is still going on today. I think there must still be old photos.
The question is, how do you find them? And I think they have other problems at the moment.
