This fits with something I read recently, and I think, David, you will appreciate (if you didn't already know it).
It is even highly relevant for the Voynich MS and refers to a process called 'betacism'.
(I thank a good friend, no longer writing here, for pointing it out to me).
It refers to the fact that in the Iberian peninsula the character 'v' was pronounced as 'b' already in the Middle Ages, leading to the late medieval joke:
"Beati hispani quibus vivere est bibere."
Lucky the Spaniards, for whom living is drinking
