  In addition, it can be seen that the old fortifications must have been round/oval, while the image in the VMS indicates a clearly structured, rectangular castle. I don't know why this needs to be mentioned at all.

  VMS castle is rectangle at the main structure but also has two cylinders and curved moat walls on either side extending.

  Still the current castle has tower from the 16th century and merlons from the 19th century.
  I would say we have no idea how it looked in the 1400s so comparing current castle to VM doesn't make sense.
  
  Today, during castle reconstructions, people usually try to establish how something looked in the past. But sometimes it is impossible and the reconstruction is a pure fantasy.

  And in the 19th century they often didn't give a damn about research and did freestyle reconstructions so it would look cool.

  What was added above doesn't really add to the discussion. I noticed the VMS castle and the recreation of Mcdermott's castle looked remarkably similar and distinct, thought it should be mentioned.

  Yeah I saw that, I'm not seeing any depictions that are accessible to the public, prior to 1700s.

  I have a ton of plants to go over, but I'll start with this one we've discussed on the last thread. 
  Based off of my translation and the visual, it is likely referring to greater knapweed from the Burren. Reference to it as a weed or "path-flower" used for minor wounds.

  The point is that the merlons are not a random design. They do not happen by chance. They never happen in Ireland.

  So that's why I said these were peripheral items. The castle is subjective and could be just imaginative. I personally see more similarities with Irish castle there and the swallowtail adjacent shape could be reflective of the artists memory or background. Time spent in both Ireland and in Italy was not unheard of for friars or nuns. 
  
  I think it's also important to just note that aside from the swallowtail, the castle itself does not look like any of the Italian castles.
