Just to be clear, I’m not attached to this theory—it’s simply one of many possible theories.
But the idea that it was also done to present the cipher does make sense. If you’re creating an entire book for that purpose, you’d naturally include plants and other illustrations; the rather poor quality of the drawings would then be further evidence of that.
There were plenty of people who practiced the forbidden arts who might have been looking for such a cipher.
