Why - we just don't know. But it raises doubt on the claim the VM was the product of some highly educated genius. I said it before but looking at the weird interconnected plants that no child would draw like this, I doubt it is simply a lack of life experience or cultural knowledge. More like a lack of basic understanding how the world works.
Maybe he was not a very bright person (and that may be why he became a second-rate Scribe and not a merchant or University professor...)
Maybe he was a 13-year-old boy who did not yet know how to "read" such allegorical paintings.
Maybe he did not know what a rosary was...
