I think I’d maybe use the words:  playing with or “incorporating”  In regards to the different traditional formats and cultural concepts referenced. Humor can be the highest form of sophistication and thre is a lot of play happening in the imagery alone.  “Depending on” traditional formats and cultural concepts  though, I’m not so sure, maybe as a means of recognizability or discretion perhaps.
