The talk of “Arrival” is problematic. Love the movie, don’t get me wrong. But Humans, thoughtful, regular humans wrote the manuscript. As I always say when talking about monoliths (an idea from Mesopotamian conception on the direction of time): the romanticization/mysticizing of our ancestors blurs the only tangible thing that guides us to our future. We walk backwards. Technology is not as predictive as the past. The VMS is open to the public. It is not accessible to just a private group of elite individuals. No one is chosen to read it. It holds tremendous knowledge and is the result of diligent work that was never extractive without credit, never extractive without purpose. Not holy, holly perhaps or hole-y. Probably not holy.
