Quote:Athanasius Kircher, the great decoder of the Egyptian hieroglyphics himself?
A bit offtopic, it was really a bad idea to give Voynich Manuscript to Kircher hoping that he will solve it.
As I see it, he posed to be a polymath and scientific superstar of his era but he was more a kind of charlatan, mixing rational and totally bizarre ideas in his work.
For example (all quotes from Wikipedia):
- His renditions of hieroglyphic texts tended to be wordy and portentous; for example, he translated a frequently occurring phrase in You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view., dd Wsr, "You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. says," as "The treachery of You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. ends at the throne of You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view., the moisture of nature is guarded by the vigilance of You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.."
-Kircher was also puzzled by You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.. He understood that fossils were the remains of animals. He ascribed large bones to giant races of humans
-He wrote that many species were hybrids of other species, for example, You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. from a combination of You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. and You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
-Kircher analyzed the dimensions of the Ark of Noah; based on the number of species known to him (excluding insects and other forms thought to You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.), he calculated that overcrowding would not have been a problem
and so on. Today Kircher would make a great Youtube star talking about his crazy ideas but I doubt he would achieve anything serious.
