I'm not sure if the characters are male or female ( They pray to St. Nicholas ).

Hi, bi3mw:

This appears to be an illustration of a famous story about St. Nicholas, where he saves the lives of three boys that have been murdered and hidden inside pickling tubs.

The story and its evolution (plus lots of interesting illustration examples) are discussed in this You are not allowed to view links. In any case, it seems it is a pretty popular story that has seen growth and change over time.
