The News Release:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

And here are sites that published it without any critical evaluation:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

And these are real head-shakers, with lots of pics added to pump up the volume:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

Mild skepticism shown here:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

....
I'm happy to see Ouellette (ArsTechnica) didn't just blindly accept and repeat the News Release as so many other writers have done.
The manuscript "has been deciphered", but "Cheshire hopes that fellow researchers will now use his findings to translate the entire Voynich manuscript."

As (almost) always, the decipherer leaves the deciphering to others. Big Grin

Yes, indeed, that seems to be a prevalent pattern. Find a few words, assume you've "cracked" the code and leave it to others to do the actual work while you bathe in the floodlights.

Anyone can find (or make) a few words. It's easy. It means nothing.
Rich SantaColoma said on vms-list that Gerard Cheshire shopped his translation around back in 2007 on that list but posted as "Richard Sheeger" which is an anagram of "Gerard Cheshire".  His ideas were not well received then, either.  Rich reposted his 2007 critique to the vms-list today.

Ricky Sheeger also posted a few hostile comments on Nick's site:
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
The Times also covers this but starts off with:

Quote:Another academic has claimed to have cracked the code of the You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.. Gerard Cheshire said it took him just two weeks using lateral thinking.
Before reminding us of Nicholas Gibbs solution. The writer doesn't seem very convinced either way.

The vms-list reference would also have been 2017.
He started off by contacting the Beinecke.
This one is for Koen:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

Oh, I know...

I did like one of the comments the article got on Facebook: "Gelukkig is al die moeite niet voynich geweest". Big Grin
Another brief article, fortunately with a bit of healthy skepticism after seeing the Ars Technica article (and referencing it):

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

And one from the Guardian:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

And ScienceAlert:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

If you missed the prior "solution" by Gibbs, here's an older article in The Atlantic:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
The trouble is that journalists see a universities name, the Dr preface to Gerald and rush to file copy. As far as they care, the university is carrying out all the research into whether or not this is accurate.
And once the big names have picked up on it, it snowballs across all the outlets.
The real problem lies with the corruption in academic circles that allows the publication of this sort of nonsense in the first place.
Gerald doesn't care - he's now famous and this will no doubt be a good stepping stone in his career.
