Can you give an example where someone from academia had a more successful career because of "showmanship" than without? -

This is a bit getting off tracks here, from an announcement to dicuss-it-all;
but about f116, I put this in:

So I am preferring "anchiton/anchicon" and
...+ma+via+... with an forgotten an later inserted '+',clearly...
By the way: this very last word is considered "mich", these letters are in clear sight, obviously. The language isn't.
"Mich" can mean "monk" in Czech (in other spelling: "mnich", both deriving from german "Mönch"), though a german translation "me" may be more tempting to those who forcingly want to see any German on this page or the whole script.
"Monk" would fit for a book that presumably was written by - monks. And there are assumptions that the VMS spent some time in czech hands...
Just sayin'. -

How am I supposed to do that? Get an identical clone of a successful academic and strip them of the showmanship and see what happens?
If the question was to give an example of successful academics who certainly possess(ed) some showmanship skills, then it's easy, take any academic that is known and popular outside of academia. Feynman, Einstein, Russel, Sapolsky, Hawking (which is truly remarkable, giving all the physical limitations). Showmanship is about engaging the audience. It's unlikely one can be a successful lecturer without some showmanship. -

I really have no doubt that what Jorge_Stolfi will share will be important and carefully explained. I like him a lot and he is one of the sincerest and most caring, humble, and contributive souls on this forum.
But fame has never gone well with scientific progress, since it becomes a distraction, and can take it away from truthful results. Even Einstein said, “To punish me for my contempt for authority, fate made me an authority myself." He was also bothered by and complained about being treated as a showman, having lost his privacy in the meantime.
To make a blank statement that showmanship skills increases scientific value is not helpful at all. The opposite can be equally argued and in fact proven. Often famed awardees of major prizes become so media glorified that they end up doing the opposite of what they were awarded for.
Regarding marginalia’s significance for understanding the Voynich manuscript, I think it has to be put in perspective. It could involve as much a misunderstanding and “hallucination” about the VM as some of our own tries today, AI assisted or not.
For example, whoever put the Zodiac month names in French on the VM must have been trying (mistakenly) to make sense of the chart’s associations with usual months, and in doing so I think has misled others down the line. The marginalia are important, of course, for their own sake, but the distinction needs to be always borne in mind. -

True, and it is also important to remember that the last page marginalia is written in the same ink as the Voynich main text. So by whomever, meaning whatever, it was applied about the same time as the author of the Voynich did, and from the same inkwell. That knowledge might be helpful, in some way, to understanding its meaning and purpose. -

If you are referring to my comments, this is not at all what I said. What I said was "an essential part of having a successful career in academia is at least a little bit of good showmanship". I didn't say anything about scientific value. Showmanship would equally help spread wrong and harmful ideas. But showmanship definitely helps promoting one's ideas, no matter if valuable or not.
