According to this article, You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. The fortified Planta tower was erected around 960 to provide protection against barbarians threatening the empire of Otto I. It is considered the oldest fortified residential tower in the Alps. The swallowtail merlons and most windows were only added around 1500. Much of the convent museum is inside this tower. So really not a good example if you believe the carbon dating.

Thanks, Michelle! It's a really cool tower, but I already suspected the crenellations looked suspicious.

I'm going to Malta in August and will definitely photograph more merlons there!

What else might be worth knowing about the wall (Murata) in Bellinzona.
What did it look like around 1356 before the Confederates breached it (around 1422) and before it was reinforced? There are 296 dovetail battlements and they face north. Only on one side. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

Point of clarification:
In reference to merlon crenulations in the VMS, note that the "castle" on the 9 rosettes folio has Guelph merlons on the left wall and Ghibelline merlons on the front and back walls. The right side of the "castle" does not have a distinct wall and therefore no crenulations. These variances may need further clarification/explanation. Dana |
