It's best not to try to fire a solid piece of clay larger than say half an inch thick, it will have difficulty drying thoroughly and more likely to have trapped air bubbles or moisture inside (which can cause it to explode in the kiln!) So the heads, torsos and upper part of the legs are sculpted hollow. The smaller parts like the hands and feet are solid. Also, the hollow part has to have a small pinhole somewhere for air to escape during firing, otherwise once again there will be an exploding nymph situation. The pinhole goes through the navel so it is camouflaged in the design.
