This is/ was an interesting thread. I did the same thing, I retraced the whole VM, and added the colours. I have a few of my own conclusions.
Its definitely one way to convince yourself it's not a hoax.
Its also obvious the artist(s) were alot better than most give them credit... I find it amusing that the art itself gets such a bad review... I think its pretty great. Try to consistently draw what the artists did, on such a small scale, with all the detail and I think one will have a different, call it respect, for the artists.
The subject matter and the execution of it is obviously a combination of quirky, eccentric and very slight humour. Combined with a possible masterminded subtext that the protaganists had to consistently embed.
My guess would be some original retracing was just data/info/ drawing quality control... making sure all the t's were crossed and busts dotted.
