The two forms coexisted for a long time during the 15th century so the modern one is not necessarily more recent. I don't see any difference in ink color or quill shape.

I didn't know that, was the style of numbers mostly a matter of personal preference in the XV century? Is it possible then, that the folio and quire numbers were created at the same time, just by different people?
