You’ve misunderstood something there.
This is about an unintentional spelling mistake by the writer. He actually spelled ‘tum’ correctly, not ‘89’.
8 + 9 are the first and last symbols of the star sign ‘Taurus’.
Together, they form a clue.
The combination (Menge) of the word and the ending gives a clue as to the language.
