Now suppose that -- some years later, back to Europe -- he gives this drawing of those two hanzi to a young scribe who has never seen a Chinese character in his life, and asks him to copy those glyphs on vellum.  Suppose that this is the result:

I think it looks quite similar to the letter psi in Old Slavic.
