It's far from a normal writing of 'd' or 's' but why not.

   
The question is: when and where did he learn to write like that?
The 8 written as a ‘d’ isn’t far off. It’s just a bit harder to understand because of the shift in sound.
And yes, ‘palden’ has already been discussed.
