A structural analysis of the Voynich Manuscript as a functional document
#2
English Summary
This post is Part 2 of a multi-part summary of a longer research work originally written in Japanese.
The English section provides a concise summary for discussion.
The full Japanese text is included below in its entirety for transparency and precise reference.
This study does not aim at decipherment or translation into any specific language.
It adopts a structural and functional approach based solely on observable features of the manuscript.

English Text
This chapter presents the analytical methodology used throughout this study.
The method does not seek translation into any known language, nor does it pursue cryptographic decipherment.
Instead, it examines observable elements of the Voynich Manuscript—such as the original text, illustrations, layout, and repetitive structures—to identify the functional roles of individual pages and their interrelationships.
Any interpretations or provisional translations proposed in this study are derived from this methodology and do not claim to represent a unique or definitive solution.

Basic Principles
The analysis is conducted according to the following principles:
  • The original text is not modified.
  • Diplomatic transcription is used, preserving spelling, line breaks, and paragraph structure.
  • Text and illustrations are treated as independent information sources and are not assumed to share a single semantic system.
  • No assumptions are made regarding proper nouns such as plant names, personal names, or astronomical names.
  • Conclusions are not drawn from isolated pages; relationships across multiple pages are prioritized.
  • The same observational framework and procedures are applied consistently to all folios.
These principles are intended to minimize interpretive bias and ensure reproducibility.

Observed Elements
Before entering semantic interpretation, the following elements are examined:
  • Repetition and frequency of word forms
  • Positional distribution of words (paragraph-initial, medial, terminal)
  • Line counts and paragraph structures
  • Stability of initial and terminal words
  • Vocabulary shared across sections
  • Components of illustrations (plants, human figures, water, containers, etc.)
  • The relationship between missing folios and sectional boundaries
All of these features are verifiable without assuming any specific underlying language.

Structural Analysis Framework
In this study, words are treated not as semantic units but as functional roles within textual structures.
When identical word forms:
  • appear in similar positions across multiple folios,
  • form comparable structural patterns, and
  • are inherited across different sections,
they are interpreted as elements performing similar functions rather than as fixed-meaning words.
From this perspective, pages are classified not by subject matter but by functional categories such as definition, application, execution, and appendix.

Extraction of Meaning Fields
Individual words are not directly translated.
Instead, the analysis extracts meaning fields formed by clusters of words.
A meaning field refers to functional domains such as:
  • action (change, adjustment, mitigation),
  • method (soaking, applying, mixing),
  • condition (quantity, frequency, timing),
  • target (internal/external, surface/deep).
These are not asserted lexical meanings but functional inferences derived from structural placement and relationships.

Role of Provisional Translations
All translations presented in this study are explicitly provisional.
They serve solely as auxiliary representations to express structural and functional relationships in natural language.
Provisional translations are provided only when they:
  • do not contradict the original structure,
  • remain consistent with illustrations and adjacent folios, and
  • do not exclude alternative interpretations.
Accordingly, they are not final translations but one method of communicating analytical outcomes.

Reproducibility and Scope
The analytical method described here can be applied uniformly to any folio.
After detailed analysis of representative folios, the same method is applied to all folios, and a summarized result is presented.
This demonstrates that the study’s conclusions are grounded in the structure of the manuscript as a whole rather than in isolated examples.

Supplement: Treatment of Major Word Forms (Example)
Frequently occurring word forms in the Voynich Manuscript (e.g., qo, che, she, aiin) are treated not as lexical items with fixed meanings but as elements defined by their functional roles.

(例:qo, che, she, aiin など)は、
固有の意味語としてではなく、
文中での機能的役割として扱う。
■ 代表的語形と役割(例)
語形:qo / qokeedy
扱い:対象・主題の提示
備考:段落冒頭に多い
語形:che / she 系
扱い:作用・処置
備考:文中中盤に集中
