Why would she carry a rosary on that particular season?  Because of the All Saints / All Souls holidays?

I believe she is supposed to be an old woman. In one case the artist messed things up and made her young but in other examples she is kinda old. At some pictures, including VM she has also a hunched back.

And old women are often hunchbacked, walk with a stick and pray a lot (so rosary is present) 

Old person is a common archetype for the winter and the passing year. Old year is dying, new year is born.
