Could this method of using macrons to designate different syllables (and therefore, different words) apply to the examples in the VMs?

It could be applicable to a limited extent over the bench symbol indeed.
My current line of investigation is that actually many distinct symbols are syllables. 
This is possibly combined with an extensive use of specialized mnemonics resulting in short vords.
