I'd point out that the TLS is not a scientific journal - it's a literary magazine. It's an ancient and respected institution, but one that normally limits itself to criticising poetry, drama and publications. Why Gibbs chose to publish there is anybody's guess. And why the world went mad over it, I have no idea.
From the TLS publication guidelines:
What are the guidelines for publication in the TLS?
We do not have any guidelines as such, but please be aware that the TLS is mostly made up of book reviews commissioned by our editors. The best guide is to read the paper itself. We occasionally publish features on writers or matters of literary interest, but we never run interviews.
