That helps a lot, Rene. Thanks!

I think I will add links in the workbook to your f101 pages on your site, as well as the Folio Browser links. Just in case anyone else clicks on the Folio Browser links and has the same question.

If there is going to be a discussion about this, I guess this might deserve its own thread, as it is quite independent of the effort of matching plant drawings.

Mark started a separate thread today for the small plants label/text discussion:

Links to Rene's site page for You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. and You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. have been added to the ratings sheet now to the related cells in the Folio #2 column. Also, adjusted the text in the related cells in the Folio Browser column to account for the position difference there. Since You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. and You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. aren't the only such folios referenced in the ratings sheet, I plan to check the related cells for those folios as well. But that will take awhile to get to. I'm hoping to finish the cell formulas in the comments comparison first since that seems to be a higher priority.

I'm trusting the rest of you to stop me, at least temporarily, if these improvements aren't helpful enough or if they're getting in the way of everyone inputting their data.  Wink
All done with the structural changes. Formulas are complete now in the Comments Comparison sheet. Checked to see if any additional links needed to be added to Rene's site but f01r and You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. were the only ones needed. Wish list sheet updated. If there are any more structural changes needed, let me know. Otherwise, the workbook is just waiting for us all to finish adding our ratings and comments plus any additional plant matches if anyone has any more to add.

You have done an excellent job with that. I need to track down the text I need for textual comparison.

Sorry, I got distracted by decoding the text...
I updated my scores for Mark's list, but the others (Th.P. and my own, plus some comments) require me to do a few other things first. I will complete this in the course of this weekend.

I note that most scores for the two shorter additional lists are still missing. I'll try to create composite images similar to Mark's as this is much more convenient.

I know I have more to contribute and I will when I get the time.

I am not sure what exactly you mean by this. However to clarify what I think should be done->

There are different pieces of text:

1) Small plant labels. Which may be split into pairs containing a root label and a leaf label
2) Herbal text. This is the full page of text against a large plant amongst the herbal pages of the manuscript.
3) Small plant page text. In addition to the individual labels against each plant there are paragraphs on Small plant page.

One would hope that there might be some relationship between this text.

Of particular interest to me is the comparison between the root label and leaf label for the same plant amongst the small plants. This is because one possibility is that the label in both cases could be the same or similar due to it being the name of the plant. However such viable pairs are probably not common as they require a good root match and a good leaf match.

I should reiterate that if we can find a pattern from this textual comparison then that is certainly a useful result.  However even if we can find no textual comparison then I would contest that that is still a useful result.

Once the label to label matches are examined then the task of comparing those labels to the large bodies of plant text can be done.
Mark.

Let's take the word otoldy You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. . It appears 11 times in the manuscript. Five cases as a mark. Of these, 2 times near a container, 2 times near dissimilar plants. And once on the “cloud” on f82v. In this case, can we say that this word is the name of the plant?

No, but if you are familiar with my thinking and writing you would know that I suspect that there are a large number of null words. Having said that I think the default hypothesis should be that these are likely to be the names of the plants and then if this presents problems the reason for these can be considered such as I have suggested.

Do you plan to add your plant matches to the spreadsheet?
In this and the following two posts I add composite images for the comparisons that I added to the Excel file with my initials. Most of these date from almost exactly 10 years ago, and I would not all give them the go-ahead anymore, but of course everyone is invited to add their votes.
Please let me know if you see any discrepancies between the pictures, their legend and the Excel file.
