All artists rely on sources. Drawing from other drawings is easier than drawing from life, especially for the inexperienced artist.
A book like the VM very likely depends on more than one source of images. And properties of the source image carry over, even if the artist may attempt to streamline things.
When Cary and I were looking into differences between A and B plants, we weren't able to determine with certainty whether there was a shift in source materials or in the artists involved. How could we ever tell the difference?
