Quick question, are we sure that all large plant drawings were initially together (probably at the beginning of the MS)? Are there any indications for this or is it more like a matter of common sense?
When digging through some 18th century Hebrew dictionaries, I came across a blog post that pointed me to a 15th century manuscript at the british library:

One of the images has a very Voynichesque object:

Nice find! I agree this chalice would not look out of place in the VM.
They tried to draw a nymph face here, then changed their mind:

Yup, probably so, Koen, and I had never noticed it hiding there under the paint. Good find.

So I wonder if it was meant to be an additional figure and they changed their minds. Or if it started out in that position and they changed it to the one that is prone just to the left of it.
My initial impression was that the figure got shifted to the left, but it could really be both. Either way, it would suggest that they started drawing a figure, or at least the upper half, by placing the forehead-nose-line.
By the way, part of my years-long search for faces has been a quest for illuminators who used this specific formula for faces (they all had recognizable formulae that I mostly have documented). I call it the bump-head connected triangle-nose style. It's not easy to find. Most of them used slight modifications of this style.

Are there in fact any actual chalices in the VM?

Could be, but then they have a lid on them. The typical open-topped chalice shape is not present in the VM. Unless of course you count You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. . And maybe even You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. , though this is rather conical.

Yes, I thought that was the case and the more I think about that, the stranger the omission seems.
