Wow, thanks!  It seems we can exclude France and Italy as the inspiration for that crown; and Habsburg, with the jagged edges, remains the best match so far.  Unfortunately it was in use since before 1420...

In the past, however, lead was mainly used for drawing and sometimes also for writing.

For instance, I just saw on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view., page f119v, a geometric diagram drawn in pencil in the top margin and then redrawn in ink in the bottom margin:
   
   

However, I don't see clear signs of pencil traces in the VMS, apart perhaps from some marginal notes.  The faint traces, of text and figures, all look like drawn in ink with a pen -- just faded.  And there there are examples that show a continuum between well-preserved brown traces and traces fading to complete invisibility...
