Unlike armadillos, pangolins tend to have tails of enormous size, which is not reflected in the VMS drawing. It's really no contest: an armadillo has to be the better choice.
I imagine that, after the radiocarbon revelations, the sunflower people were forced to renounce their New World theories or else be subjected to public ridicule and possibly lose their jobs.
Well, I have no job to lose, so I will continue to speak truth to ignorance.

You don't listen. You assume as much about people as you do about the manuscript.
I do NOT have a made-in-Europe theory. I have TOLD you this before but you have either forgotten it or you don't believe it.
I DON'T KNOW where the VMS was made. It is on the shelf in my mind labeled UNKNOWN ORIGIN (which means anywhere in the world).
When I identified the plants (I have told you this already more than once), I looked around the world.
You seem to have difficulty dealing with ambiguity. But ambiguity is what research is all about. There are things we DON'T KNOW and that we should admit we DON'T KNOW so that we can recognize clues when we find them instead of assuming what they are going to be.
So stop telling me that I have a Europe theory because I do not. I am not arguing against the armadillo (it's on my list too). I AM ARGUING AGAINST PREMATURE ASSUMPTIONS. That's why I have a LIST of possible IDs, because there are many possibilities. It is not necessary to narrow it down prematurely. In fact, doing so can blind one to what it might actually be.
Anyway, enjoy your journey through the swamps. When people start putting words in my mouth that aren't there, I'm done. -

Indeed they are. Take a good look at that armadillo on f80v. He's depicted running into the bushes and rolling himself into a ball in order to hide.
Why?
Because the gal next to him is holding a bloody scalpel in her hand and is planning to make herself an extended headdress out of armadillo hide! -

I'll admit that the armadillo depicted in the VMS looks a lot like the three-banded armadillo of the Tolypeutes genus. Also in the same Tolypeutinae subfamily we find the northern naked-tailed armadillo which lived in Central America and which did not have ostentatious bands.
Though the northern armadillo may not have been able to roll itself into a perfect ball, it probably came close to being able to do so and is likely what we see in the VMS.

I continue to maintain that the VMS armadillo is depicted trying to hide to avoid becoming a headdress extension. -

JP, I have read widely on the Cathars and for all practical purposes they were wiped out in the 13th century by a combination of crusading armies and Inquisition torture chambers. There are reports that someone in southern France claimed to be a Cathar in the early 14th century and was promptly executed. And Wikipedia thinks Cathars continued to survive in northern Italy until the early 14th century.
As far as I know, no one but you thinks that "Catharism continued to exist in many parts of Europe until the mid-15th century." For that remark, I suggest you check with other sources for verification.
Note that I never claimed that the entire Cathar sect migrated to America. My theory only maintains that a small group of Cathar women, to escape torture and certain death in Europe, crossed the Atlantic taking with them the sacred texts of their religion. -

What makes you think the gal at the top of the page is holding a pangolin scale? It doesn't look like the pangolin scales that your link shows us.
