The function of a root is to take in water and nutrients, and to transport them from the stem to the leaves. In other words, it is the primary organ that sustains life—or, metaphorically, the initial starting point of any endeavor.

What we see here is a model—a representation—of that concept, cast in the form of a root.

So, what exactly is being modeled? Uncovering that is the key to solving the mystery.

Hint: A specific technique is used to connect the roots and the stem. Let’s take a close look at the illustration.

Thanks for the hint. I've now made a partial breakthrough myself!

This is clearly some kind of model for the primary organ that sustains plant life -the starting point of any endeavor for a plant- which seems to take in water and nutrients, and transports them from the stem to the leaves!

Like.. some kind of root!   Surprised

It's been a while since we've had one of these. It almost feels nostalgic.
