Let me offer one more visual comparison. The root—or rather, the rhizome—is certainly not that of *Dentaria* (or *Cardamine*); large concentric circles are clearly visible on it. I am not usually one for such minute scrutiny, but this feature is very conspicuous. More importantly, however, there is the question of why the plant depicted is Solomon’s seal (*Polygonatum*). This points to a specific way of interpreting the VMS: it illustrates that even what has been severed by earthly life and sin remains under divine protection, and that what was once divided will be reunited in purity. That is how these plant illustrations should be read.
