Why does the rosette in the upper left corner resemble an eye?
1) It represents the Seventh Heaven.
2) Quote: "Then those two men lifted me up from there and carried me into the seventh heaven. There I saw a very great light and all the fiery hosts of great archangels and incorporeal powers and lordships, principalities and authorities, cherubim and seraphim; thrones and the many-eyed ones." (1 Enoch)
3) The great light is depicted as a mandorla.
4) The many-eyed ones are angels known as Ophanim.
5) In 1 Enoch, the Ophanim are presented as celestial beings. Together with the cherubim and seraphim, their task is to surround and ceaselessly guard the throne of God's glory.
6) Quote: "Seraphim and cherubim and Ophanim also surrounded Him—these are the ones who do not sleep and who guard the throne of His glory." (1 Enoch)
