It looks cloudy and worn, like a dirty spot on top. It feels like a pareidolia.

If I were familiar with these languages (and I should be familiar with them in order to say this), I would try to translate the text rather than change it to Latin letters.

How much study would it take for you to realize that the bizarre script is not just an elaboration of the Latin script -- even though you can read the Zodiac month names, and several of the glyphs (like o, a, y, i, C, r, d, q) do look like Latin letters?

If he was drawing on the outlines of the erased letters, why didn't he recognize the gallows and write them as L and B, which didn't quite resemble them?
