This is from BnF cod. gr 74,
a byzantine manuscript in greek, produced in Constantinople at ~11th century.
This book was reproduced/copied in Georgia (2x) about 12th ct, and in Bulgaria in 14th century.
This one here appears to be from the bulgarian version:

It is not about the size of these "flowers" and the fact that they are about to be cultivated somehow --
here are some guys even climbing them:

The whole BnF is filled with paintings of this type of trees; it seems to be standard for the complete manuscript.

This here is from Kiev psalter, made in 1397AD:

and you will find again this type of trees throughout the whole book.

As both production / copy dates are lying quite next in time to the VMS, these tree drawings appear to be a known standard at least for biblical scripts -- whatever plant is meant by it. I can not imagine or remember any trees that look even similar to this.
It may be scenical for the places where the bible episodes happened, but even palm trees are shown differently here.

Maybe somebody is interested in which scenes are described in the according texts, at least the agricultural painting may mention the trees that are shown there.

I do not follow this trace, as mentioned earlier: "staring at plants" will lead to nothing.

Here, it opens the option that at least some VMS "plant" drawings of You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. (or even f50v) are not showing cute little garden flowers, but full-grown exotic trees or something -- and we have not the slightest idea yet, why (minimum 3) medieval artists chose this way to paint plants, in a style we are not able to understand at all.
