as a puzzle that was obfuscated and disguised in order to appear as something it is not.

I believe the Voynich is enciphered. However I don't think that it was made to appear as something it is not. 

Whether patterns are seen or patterns are not seen, the elements are present on the page. And given that the elements clearly are present in the illustration, patterns can be seen when they correspond to what is known about historical reality. The patterns are present; it's their interpretations that have been absent.

Well, as I said sometimes people see patterns that don't exist. Sometimes people want to see patterns.
