I really have no idea what the motive was for using mostly Latin conventions and I try not to think about it too often because humans do the strangest things for the strangest reasons. I try to focus mostly on what was done, not why it was done. If you nailed me to the wall and said, "Why?" there seem so many different possibilities, it would probably take 10 minutes to list them all.
