Long time offline, it's always great to see that the VMS keeps being decoded, this warms the heart. Wink

Do you expect in to be decoded within 10 years?
Judging by the dynamics of the last 9 years (during which I have been the inhabitant of the Voynich world), I'd say no, but let's say I expect it being decoded within 50 years.

Much has been done in the recent years, and is being done, to lay the foundation of success, in the first place in terms of quantitative research, and also in terms of bringing attention to peculiarities previously either unnoticed or largely ignored, thus generally diverting the community effort from unpromising research directions. As the universal law suggests, quantity will transform into quality sooner or later.

Why are you an inhabitant of the Voynich world if you don't think you think the Manuscript can be solved within a reasonable time?
Well, because it's fun trying to solve it Tongue
Nobody knows when the Voynich will be deciphered  It could be a relative suddenly thing. For example, someone discovers a document, which makes a huge difference in decipherment. Or someone discovers a feature of the text which makes a huge difference in decipherment. We have no way to predict when and if this breakthrough will happen.

Personally if we humans haven't figured it out in the next 20 years I think it is very plausible that AI will play a big part in deciphering it.

Much things that AI can do stem from things we are somehow already knowledgeable about. I don't think, to the best of my knowledge, know of any attempts to teach natural languages to an AI just through 300 pages of some obscure books. The dataset seems too small, in my humble opinion.
I agree, AI is just a parrot.
I think it is impossible for us to guess right now what the future of AI will be. Is the current situation basically what we will get? In that case, AI may only solve the VM if the solution lies along the lines of current investigations. For example if it contains a simple substitution cipher. But I think the current generation of "AI" isn't able to think outside the box enough to find the solution if it's something else entirely.

I don't think anyone can predict what AI may develop into though. Just like nobody could predict exactly how massively impactful the internet would become, or to what the first smartphone would lead.

For now, in our current state of knowledge and AI development, the biggest hurdle may be that computers always need the right prompts. We need to know what we are looking for first, and I don't think we do.

As I tried to convey in my comment, I don't think it is necessarily an 'either or' situation, it could most likely be a human using an AI to assist in decipherment.

We know a variety of possibilities for what Voynichese is. The AI might be told to assume a specific given possibility is the case and then see what the best it can come up with given that possibility. Likewise it could be set running with another different possibility assumption. The AI may be much better at exploring the solution space given a specific assumption than we are able to.
