  It is generally thought of as a cube, with four walls as high as they are wide. The idea of it being square is important, though not always followed to the same degree in illustration.
  
  The codex Gigas shows a side-view of the city with its many layers of "foundations". Opposed, it shows the devil, the antagonist and loser of the story.

  Again, it could be a picture of ordinary Jerusalem.

  I haven't found any ancient depictions of Heavenly Jerusalem as a cube. It feels like a more modern concept.

  The bible gives its dimensions as cubic, but indeed nobody drew a nice block. They tended to draw a square floor plan (not always), but had trouble fulfilling the demanding list of biblical requirements.
  
  But it's important to keep in mind that Heavenly Jerusalem (the city that descends at the end times and becomes the abode of the blessed) and regular Jerusalem (the conventional center of many medieval maps) are not the same.
