In fact, it is difficult to say that the VMS actually depicts comets.
On You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. (where these figures first appear), the two stars do not have a tail, and the tail of the upper star extends to the letter k.
On f105r, you can also see that the tail of the upper star extends towards t.
The stars in the Starred Parags are shaped like a comet. The rest are not really.
I believe that the purpose of this star/comet is more decorative and is designed to mark sections of text.
But it's still very interesting, by the way... -

But maybe it makes some sense, considering the possible astrological implications of VMS...
Maybe Starred Parags is a list of astronomical phenomena or ephemeris? -

Compared to other examples in heraldry, art, and elsewhere, which show the tails of comets as more elaborate, diffuse, and decorative, these slim, single representations stand out for their simplicity. It wouldn't take very much visual compression to turn such a comet into a "star on a string".

Interestingly, the Great Comet of 1472 was first seen in Virgo. By whom???

Another possibility may connect to the doges of Venice if early examples of the insignia show this type of comet.

As doge of Venice, he led the Venetian Crusade (3rd), plundered and looted and trimmed the hedges. He was big in Venice, then (1130) became a monk.

How far back does the quartered insignia go? And where did that comet come from?
