I reproduced this ointment successfully.I assume you mean Franz Biba (Mag. pharm.), librarian at the library of the Austrian Chamber of Pharmacists. But neither is he a professor nor was he ever the overall head of the chamber. This is not meant to diminish his qualifications, but to keep things straight. If you cite people, please cite them correctly. Have you checked their library or asked for relevant manuscripts? Since you apparently have a connection to their librarian, this might be an interesting source for VM-related texts.
I also have to ask - did you show Mr. Biba a picture of You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. (preferably the multispectral images), or just your interpretation of the text?

The plus sign was "invented" by Nicole Oresme in ~1350, but I don't know how long it took for it to become common. If the VMS was scribed around 1430, and those "+" on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. are indeed plus signs, that would be evidence indicating that the You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. writing is not contemporaneous with the rest of the VMS text.
But I don't think those "+" are plus signs. I believe the You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. text is much later than the rest of the VMS, but for other reasons.

Hello, thanks for your comment. The + signs of this note simple indicate which ingredients have to be added and which procuction steps to be made further.
What makes you believe the text is later? The orthography is typical for the beginning of the 15th century, no capital letters yet, no gemination of consonants yet.
This is striking. Regarding recipes not all instructions were strictly formatted. Many were written in continuous prose and medical writing was highly diverse, it also depended on the audience.
Kind regards, Monika
