The vertical design of some of the medicinal jars in the cipher manuscript is similar to much older jar depictions, like the one in the 10th century copy (Constantinople, the Byzantine Empire) of Theriaca et Alexipharmaca (by the 2nd century BC Greek physician Nicander of Colophon) which is held at the Bibliotheque nationale de France (BnF).
