Eggyk volunteered to take over managing the excel sheets for Zodiac imagery rating, which I am very grateful for.
As you may recall, we started off with Taurus: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
Eggyk will also transfer this sheet into a new, standard layout.
So now, let's discuss which features should be tracked for Virgo. Here is the VM Virgo for reference:
Some initial ideas, all subject to change depending on your input and a trial run:- Headgear: how do we describe this hat? Should "wearing hat" and the type of hat be separate categories?
- Blue dress: the main color of the clothing is blue.
- Wide open sleeves at wrist/forearm level
- Dagged edges of wide sleeves (we can include lace finish here as well, anything that provides a wavy or jagged edge).
- Line at wrist level indicates undergarment with tighter sleeves (only if there is a wide-sleeved overgarment, this combination is the salient feature)
- double line at the neck?
- short hair style?
- holding flower? Instances where she holds a star deserve special attention, but holding a flower seems like the most common approximation. The thing that she's holding could even be taken as a flower.
- Standing on outdoor terrain (I wouldn't specify too much here)
- Something about the width of the dress at the bottom? How to best describe this? Her dress flares up behind her to shoulder level. Is this due to the circular arrangement? This may become clear after a trial run.
- Facing left
- Both hands extended forwards? Not sure if this may be useful.
Things to ignore:- I have always interpreted her as standing, but some think she's sitting, so the overall pose may be ambiguous, I wouldn't include this.
- Her pose does not allow us to see whether the garment is belted.
Please let me know if I missed anything important, or if you would omit or change anything. - Headgear: how do we describe this hat? Should "wearing hat" and the type of hat be separate categories?

For some of these, it may be valuable to have a slightly broad category, and then make use of the "blue" rating in order to seperate out the best ones.
For example, you could have "is holding something in right hand" as a score of 1, but instances with a noticeable match like 'holding a star' can be given a score above 1 (any score above 1 will mark them automatically as blue, making them easier to find and sort).
That way we can really contrast and track the differences at a glance:
not holding anything - kinda holding something - holding something - holding exact thing we want
not wearing hat - kinda wearing a hat - wearing a hat - wearing notable/voynichy hat
not depicted with/near flowers - depicted kinda with/near flowers - depicted with/near flowers - depicted with/next to perfect match of vms flower
More specific/clear cut ones are of course different. You can't be notably facing to the left

That would certainly be more compact. The same can be done for extra lines at neck, wrist or both to show undergarment or collar. -

One of my many unfinished projects was to write a You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.. But I am still stuck at less than halfway, and I already found out that a lot the stuff there was incorrect.
It turned out that creating that description was much more informative than reading it -- because it forced me to systematically look at every detail of every page.
Still, maybe you find something useful in there. Like the tables with nymph attributes.

Post #18 has a good *blue* Virgo pictured and a source. She is facing to the right. VMs is going to the left. Unless you want to use the heraldic perspective. Directional orientation is somewhat problematic. It seems like a clear choice, but even heraldry gets reversed on occasion.
I'm not sure that "kinda" isn't sort of a false category. - She is not holding anything. She is holding something. There is no "kinda". Is it a star or a flower - or a pass on the palm fronds?

Whoever drew the VMS zodiacs were either copying directly, or copying from memory. That means the broad strokes of the design probably hold more statistical insight than the very detailed aspects, which may have been a unique style trait of a single artist or a one off depiction.
If I were to copy the VMS virgo sign from memory multiple times, would it always share the exact details? Probably not. But she would be wearing a blue hat, blue dress, would be holding a star, and would be facing the same way every time, that's for sure. And whichever source the VMS was sourcing from likely had those same traits.
Here is a genuine(ly awful) attempt in paint from memory, without looking:
And I would wager that if we asked 50 people to copy from memory without looking in the same way, we would have 50 reasonably similar images with some wildly different styles. But the common aspects shared by all of them would represent what we're looking for, imo.
Edit: I thought I would actually test that, so with my partner's permission, here is her attempt. She isn't a VMS enthousiast, and she copied from memory. You can certainly see it's the VMS virgo, but can also clearly see it's totally different from both mine and the original.(and you can perhaps clearly see she is the more talented artist..)
Also note that both of our depictions kept the double line for the neck area, the wideness of the dress, as well as the inclusion of the hat.
So I think there should be a distinction between what the VMS author was trying to draw, and the exact style of how they drew it. I would say that finding an example like my drawn version would be quite exciting, honestly, even though it's an awful copy and most of the actual details are totally off. -

I think that foreground terrain is a distinguishing factor, at least as far as its presence or absence. I might guess that you read Koen's description, but your partner just saw the picture and missed that detail.
Looking at the VMs terrain brings up a wrinkle from an old investigation. Where is the hem of her dress? There is an area that is the lowest and furthest left, with a good smudge of blue paint. Is this part of the dress or is it something else painted blue as a disguise.
It has been suggested that this curved area represents one of the horns of the crescent moon - and the other little horn is way off and up to the right. This sort of subtle inclusion of a crescent moon, of a woman standing on a crescent moon, adds another layer of potential interpretation with the amalgamated, religious references.
And don't forget the sleeves.
