One complicating factor is that the serpent is supposed to undergo a metamorphosis before it becomes the animal we know today, when god punishes it. It is often represented as a snake with a woman's head (sometimes wearing a crown), with arms, sometimes a whole human body. Sometimes a bird-monster. Sometimes a dragon-like creature.
