The only species that rolls up into a ball is the three-banded armadillo

I'll admit that the armadillo depicted in the VMS looks a lot like the three-banded armadillo of the Tolypeutes genus. Also in the same Tolypeutinae subfamily we find the northern naked-tailed armadillo which lived in Central America and which did not have ostentatious bands.

Though the northern armadillo may not have been able to roll itself into a perfect ball, it probably came close to being able to do so and is likely what we see in the VMS.



I continue to maintain that the VMS armadillo is depicted trying to hide to avoid becoming a headdress extension.
