To make the movie file I used ffmpeg:

ffmpeg -framerate 4  -pattern_type glob -i 'test*.jpg'  -c:v libx264  out.mp4

Then to make the gif:

ffmpeg -i out.mp4 out.gif

And I made it a bit smaller using "convert" from ImageMagick:

convert out.gif -resize 700 out2.gif
