As you can see, the VMS wasn't compiled by Italian monks at all but rather by Spanish nuns! And more than that, they say that the underlying research supporting this conclusion was subjected to peer review and presumably confirmed as true and accurate.

You just chose to reference the one person who is on the hot-seat right now for poor research practices. The University of Bristol even redacted the press release describing his paper and they almost NEVER do that.
