Hmm... well I'm sorry to bring down the discussion from such lofty heights, but to me this image seems to display elaborate root grafting techniques more than anything else.
The scoring on the roots of the upper plant, to me refers to incisions on the actual plant, not a 3D attempt... and the way the "spikes" from the lower root lead into the top one really remind me of the technique used here:
