I've found an interesting parallel for this U shaped water flow in a pool.

It is from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. of Al-Jazari's Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices (Accession N° 22.1), a fascinating Egyptian manuscript from 1354 which is all about fountains, clocks and other hydraulic machines.
Unfortunately their website doesn't give the folio number.
There are other versions of the MS in Leiden and one at the Bodleian, but I can't find them online.
ETA: The original book is much older than that (1206), 1354 is just that copy.
For those interested in finding out more about this book there is a really great translation with (b&w) images and commentary You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
