RE: f17v - Koen G - 24-09-2016 Don I think you are sometimes right about the birds, but sometimes they just look like leaves to me. Or at least not like a recognizable species of birds. The soldier though, that's a nice one. I just knew something was off there with those leaves, but I never undestood what exactly. The eyes have to be trained to recognise them. Do certainly let me kbow is there are more human figures like these. The one on the other folio has been discussed by Diane in a number of posts, so I knew about that one. I think her arguments about it representing one of the dioskouri are very strong, so that's the explanation I prefer at the moment. RE: f17v - Ruby Novacna - 05-10-2016 Regarding the symbolism of this image, Edith Sherwood has already spoken about. She saw Da Vinci signing in the tuber hairs. Unfortunately you have not said anything on this work. RE: f17v - Koen G - 05-10-2016 Ruby - I must admit that usually I find little value in Sherwood's work. I tried to find where she talks about the symbolism of this image but I only found out on her website that she identifies it as yam - which is strange. Do you happen to have a link where she talks about the symbolism? RE: f17v - Ruby Novacna - 08-10-2016 Indeed, I found no any research tool on the Sherwood site, but the link is here You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.. Why the choice of yam would be strange ? RE: f17v - don of tallahassee - 08-10-2016 Probably because yams are from New World and not discovered until 1492 or after by Europeans. The dating of the VMS pages (and therefore probably the VMS text/images) is earlier. Thank you. Don of Tallahassee RE: f17v - Ruby Novacna - 08-10-2016 Don, Marco just proposed the image of a dioscorea. I add a link for Linnaeus. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
