RE: Pisces (Folio 70v) and the New Year on the 1st of March in the Republic of Venice - Dobri - 06-05-2025

During the early 15th century, the seasons were already out of track with the Julian calendar by nearly 10 days.

Therefore, most of Pisces was observed mainly in February in accordance with the Julian calendar when tracking the sun's apparent movement through the constellation.

The association of Pisces with March was made by someone after the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1582 which resulted in skipping 10 days and subsequently observing most of Pisces in March.

In the You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view., it is shown that most of Pisces is in February.

However, the Venetian New Year on the 1st of March is still within Pisces.

The scheme looks like this:

- first decan of Pisces in February (9 females reclining counterclockwise);
- a female reclining clockwise (29th of February in a leap year); and
- forthcoming second and third decans of Pisces in March (19 standing-up females with stars oriented clockwise).
...

Since the quoted very first post was written within the framework of the Gregorian calendar, the following straightforward modification makes it suitable for the Julian calendar in the early 15th century.

The scheme now looks like this:
- last decan of Pisces in March (9 females reclining counterclockwise);
- a female reclining clockwise (29th of February in a leap year); and
- first and second decans of Pisces in February (19 standing-up females with stars oriented clockwise).

The next folio after Pisces shows 10 + 5 = 15 naked nymphs (a decan and a half) in Aries, 9 + 15 => March 24th.

The next day is March 25th and Venice celebrates it as the founding day of the city, with the consecration of the Church of San Giacomo di Rialto.

Perhaps this could explain why all 15 nymphs (a decan and a half) in the subsequent second Aries folio are well dressed and the stars they hold are bigger and brighter.

The next folio after Aries shows 11 well-dressed + 4 naked (perhaps due to a shortage of color pigments?) = 15 nymphs (a decan and a half) in Taurus, March 25th + 15 (Aries) + 15 (Taurus) => April 24th.

On April 25th Venice celebrates "You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view."

The 15 nymphs (a decan and a half) in the subsequent second Taurus folio are naked.

Note that not all nymphs in the second Taurus folio appear as female, see the one on the top (oaiin ar ary).

If seems that there is also a well-dressed male on the top of the first Taurus folio (okolar).

For completeness, here is the number of nymphs/satyrs for each zodiac sign in the cipher manuscript (counting outward from the innermost ring):

February, Pisces, 9 + 1 + 19 = 29
March, Aries, 15 + 15 = 30
April, Taurus, 15 + 15 = 30
May, Gemini, 9 + 16 + 5 = 30
June, Cancer, 7 + 11 + 12 = 30
July, Leo, 12 + 18 = 30
August, Virgo, 12 + 18 = 30
September, Libra, 10 + 20 = 30
October, Scorpio, 10 + 16 + 4 = 30
November, Sagittarius, 10 + 16 + 4 = 30

Except for the month of February, all other months have 30 nymphs/satyrs (or days) similarly to the known lunar paper volvelles and folded almanacs of the 15th century.

Dobri, have you ever posted the nymph count on your blog? And, by the way, I don't see its address. That might save you from posting every 30 minutes.

Ruby, no man posts a nymph count on their own blog. The scribes encrypted their count six centuries ago and here we are now.

There are at least three possible interpretations of an individual nymph/satyr:

- one degree out of the 30 degrees allocated to each one of the 12 zodiac signs (most plausible);

- one day in a lunar calendar (but there have to be lunar months of alternating durations, either 29 or 30 days); and

- one day in a solar calendar (but there have to be solar months of alternating durations, either 30 or 31 days).
