The handwritten illuminated manuscript, with its decorative and unique style, has been fundamental in the evolution of art. Originating millennia ago, it grew in beauty and intricacy during Medieval times, peaked in the Renaissance, and evolved into an expressive way to communicate and preserve ideas.
One such manuscript was discovered in a religious villa outside Rome in 1912 and soon became one of the most fascinating and mysterious books in the world. Simply bound with 240 pages, the manuscript features a perplexing style of writing, and is full of fantastic illustrations of non-existent flora, astrological symbols, and strange people; it has never been decoded.
Bought by book dealer Wilfrid Voynich, the manuscript ended up at the Yale University Library Rare Book Collection, where it remains to this day. Art book, manuscript, field book, or hoax, the Voynich Manuscript is an enigmatic piece full of creativity that deserves our full attention.
In this 5 week class led by Mexico City-based artist and educator Teté Montero, we will enter the world of illuminated manuscripts with a special focus on the Voynich Manuscript, the inception, shape, organization, visual qualities and unequivocal beauty of which will be foundational for our creative practice.
We will review select graphics and the creative history of manuscripts, their parts and symbolism, including calligraphy, cosmovisions, and the secrets that lie within. Then, we will develop our personal enigmatic language, elementary code, and format for a final project. Inspiration on how to design and illustrate will be provided, and students will choose the artistic medium and color palette with which to create either a full book or single leaf. Examples of imagery, art prompts, and mindful exercises will guide our own unique finished manuscripts.
This online workshop will include illustrated lectures, fun mindfulness projects, and an abundance of hands-on prompts and exercises.
Students are free to select the medium(s) they wish to work with.
No prior art experience is necessary! This process will be deeply personal, playful, and fully creative.
Teté Montero is a Mexican artist and educator, death doula, unicorn enchantress, story teller and weaver, by choice. She is neurodivergent by neurology, a self appointed renaissance woman, and textile arts teacher. She apprenticed under the care of master weaver Kenzo Jo in textile Saori art while in Japan. In addition, she has studied at University of Cambridge, Harvard University, The Hospice Association, Upaya Zen Center, and the Authentic Presence Organization. Her focus has been in medical studies, contemplative end of life care, medieval studies, socially engaged Buddhism and art. She currently runs a fiber art studio in Mexico City with her rambunctious dog Kayi. She is Buddhist too!
